Apple owns 74% of smartphone web traffic, 95% of tablet traffic

Chitika found that a whopping 95% of tablet Web traffic came from a version of Apple’s iPad, mainly the newest iPad, and 72% of smartphone traffic also belongs to Apple, compared to 26% for Android devices.

Do Android users know that their phones can browse the web? This is such a weird thing. Report after report says that despite Android selling more and more devices every day, with hundreds of models from so many manufacturers, still iOS dominates web browsing. I’ve heard some speculate that most Android buyers really don’t know what they are buying, and that they just get what the store employee tells them and then basically just play games and use it as a phone (as they did with a feature phone, not a smartphone). Whatever it is, it’s really weird, so many freaking phones and not using them to their potential, especially with bigger screens like the ridiculous Galaxy Note. It just doesn’t add up.

Google Said to Face Fine by U.S. Over Apple Safari Breach

Google Inc. (GOOG) is negotiating with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission over how big a fine it will have to pay for its breach of Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s Safari Internet browser, a person familiar with the matter said.

The fine could amount to more than $10 million dollars, said the person, who declined to be identified because the talks are confidential. The fine would be the first by the FTC for a violation of Internet privacy as the agency steps up enforcement of consumers’ online rights.

Nice post by Mac OS X Daily. No need to panic, we’re not on Windows XP territory yet. Just follow common sense, and be careful. Also, follow these instructions on their site. As far as anti-virus goes, it’s up to you. On my Windows machines I only use Microsoft Security Essentials, and run as a Standard User (as well as on my Mac) and have been virus free for over four years now (on the Windows side, on the Mac, so far so good).

Although browser preferences are personal, I recommend using Chrome or Firefox (with Noscript). Last but not least, keep everything updated, the OS, browser, apps, plugins, etc. If you are running Lion, Java was not installed by default, and there is a very good chance you don’t need it at all.

I found this on MacLife, and it’s a very nice post about disabling Java on your Mac in case you have it installed. Now that we have this “issue” with the Flashback Trojan using vulnerabilities in Java to infect unsuspecting users, I think it’s a good time to do this. Also, Lion does not come with Java installed by default, and it’s a good bet Mountain Lion will do the same. If you don’t need Java (and it’s very likely you don’t), just don’t install it in the first place.

Regulators in the U.S. and European Union are investigating Google for bypassing the privacy settings of millions of users of Apple’s Safari Web browser, according to people familiar with the investigations. Google stopped the practice last month after being contacted by The Wall Street Journal.
