Google to Fork Webkit

Google:

Chromium uses a different multi-process architecture than other WebKit-based browsers, and supporting multiple architectures over the years has led to increasing complexity for both the WebKit and Chromium projects. This has slowed down the collective pace of innovation – so today, we are introducing Blink, a new open source rendering engine based on WebKit.

You know what Google? Fork You.

Apple’s iOS mobile web share calls into question reports touting Android sales supremacy

Appleinsider:

An uptick in mobile web usage by iOS devices, matched by an even greater decline in Android web traffic since November, is calling into question figures from IDC that reported an apparent, significant slippage by Apple in global tablet market share.

Either these firms don’t know how to estimate these things, or Android users don’t know their devices have a browser.

Apple Safari is 10 years old today

TUAW:

The first version of Safari was released as a public beta exactly ten years ago today. The app was designed by Apple to replace Microsoft Internet Explorer, which was the default Mac browser up to OS X 10.2.

Internet Explorer…thank goodness they changed that. Also, Google Chrome is based on WebKit, developed by Apple, so two of the four most used browsers are a result of Apple’s work.

Wired:

The date was March 26, 1976, and the ARPANET — the computer network that eventually morphed into the internet — had just come to the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment, a telecommunications research center in Malvern, England. The Queen was on hand to christen the connection, and in the process, she became one of the first heads of state to send an e-mail.

Queen Elizabeth, go figure.

IE10 grabs 0.51% market share, Firefox passes 20% again, Chrome loses users third month in a row

The Next Web:

At 17.24 percent, Chrome is still just behind Firefox. This is the third month’s loss for Google’s browser, and right now it’s not looking as if it will pass Firefox this year.

I had been using Chrome for months, but recently it has become painfully slow on the Mac at least. It takes almost a minute between launching the app and it being usable. You can see the processor working to get Chrome up and running. Trying to make Chrome do as many tricks as possible has turned it into Firefox a while ago.
