Motorola developing Android phones with stock software, ‘just right’ size

The Verge

PC Mag spoke with Jim Wicks, Motorola’s chief of design, who said that these new phones are the result of collaboration and influence from Google, as opposed to the other devices that Motorola has released in the time since Google acquired the company. “It will be the unadulterated version of Android, and I feel really good about our embracing Android and being the best Android experience,” said Wicks when speaking about the new devices, adding “there’s a sweet spot for consumers that we’re currently exceeding in the market. There are some people that like a big display, but there’s also a lot of people that want something that’s just about right. I think ‘just right’ is important, and we’re designing so we don’t disappoint those people.”

This is the right move, both for Motorola and Google. Motorola will have an edge by having a pure Android experience, and Google has a platform which they control and which will cary their services unaltered. With the moves being made by Samsung, which is the only one making money on the Android side, they have to do this.

Also, I find it curious that they talk about the size of the phone and not wanting to make a gigantophone. Isn’t Apple doomed because their phone is too small?

THE COST OF GOOGLE’S ANTITRUST VICTORY: ITS MOTOROLA PATENTS ARE NOW WORTH EVEN LESS THAN BEFORE

BGR:

TheWall Street Journal reports that Motorola’s patent portfolio took a significant hit to its value this week after the Federal Trade Commission concluded its investigation into whether Google allegedly abused the patents it obtained when it finalized its acquisition of the electronics manufacturer last year. According to the Journal, one of the concessions Google made to the FTC to avoid litigation involved “agreeing to an FTC consent order restricting the use of many of its best patents as weapons,” which significantly diminishes the company’s ability to pursue aggressive patent lawsuits against rivals.

Apple Wins Ruling in Motorola Mobility Patent Case at ITC

Bloomberg:

Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone didn’t violate patent rights owned by Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Motorola Mobility for a sensor that prevents accidental hang-ups, a U.S. International Trade Commission judge said today. The patent is invalid, ITC judge Thomas Pender said in a notice posted on the agency’s docket. The judge’s findings are subject to review by the full commission, which has the power to block imports of products that infringe U.S. patents. “We’re disappointed with this outcome and are evaluating our options,” Jennifer Erickson, a spokeswoman for Motorola Mobility, said in an e-mail.

Those $12.5 Billion spent by Google on Motorola are looking good.

Eric Schmidt says Google is the new Microsoft and it’s winning the war against Apple

The Verge

“Wining” must involve not making money and buying a company (cough, Motorola) to write off big losses and letting one partner (cough, Samesung) dominate and make all the bucks.

Judge cancels trial, tosses Apple’s FRAND lawsuit against Google’s Motorola Mobility

FOSS Patents:

Following a hearing in the morning, a federal judge in the Western District of Wisconsin has canceled an Apple v. Motorola Mobility trial that was scheduled to start today at 1 PM Central Time and has dismissed the entire case with prejudice, meaning that the only way Apple can salvage these claims is through an appeal (but not through refiling in another U.S. district court).

First iPhone 5 Geekbench results: Dual Core A6 more than doubles iPad 3 score, narrowly beats high end Androids

See? This is why Samesung’s ad has no consequence whatsoever. Because Apple makes both the hardware and the software, they can do more with less.

Google loses leverage as Motorola Mobility confirms German patent license to Apple

FOSS Patents:

In the aftermath of Apple’s resounding U.S. court victory over Samsung, analysts again ask the question whether its acquisition of Motorola Mobility has enabled Google to protect Android against patent assertions — and the consensus answer to this question is “no”. I expressed serious doubts (to say the least) about that deal from the day of its announcement. Many people were impressed by the sheer size of Motorola Mobility’s portfolio, but leverage, as opposed to size, is the right measure.

They have a ton of patents, but how many are really worth anything?

ITC decides Apple didn’t violate Motorola WiFi patent after all, tosses case back to judge

Engadget:

A Commission review of the decision on Friday determined that Apple didn’t violate the patent, and it upheld positions that exonerated the iPhone maker regarding two others.

It’s a nice one year anniversary for Tim Cook so far today.
