Google’s Nexus tablet selling fast across retail chains

Reuters:

Google Inc’s “Nexus 7″ tablet is off to an encouraging start, with major retailers running out of the gadgets as the Internet company’s first entry in an increasingly crowded market showed up in U.S. stores on Friday.

GameStop said on Friday it had already run through its first two allocations of the tablet, co-developed by Google and Taiwan’s Asustek that starts at $199 and has drawn glowing reviews from major gadget reviewers.

Sam’s Club, the warehouse chain owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc , and Staples listed the device as being out of stock on their websites as of Friday. Office Depot’s website continued to offer the device for sale as of the afternoon.

Maybe there is a market for a 7″ tablet. Interested in seeing what would happen if Apple actually enters this market…

IDC estimates Apple sold less Macs in the US during the last quarter.

Computerworld:

IDC estimated that Apple sold 1.81 million Macs in the U.S. during the quarter that ended June 30, down 1.1% from the 1.83 million machines sold in the same quarter of 2011.

Ok, let’s say that’s true and accurate (this is an estimate, and we know how accurate analyst are). First, is not that big of a deal selling 200,000 units less, considering what the rest of the industry is going through. Second, Apple has been selling more of everything outside of the US for some time now, especially in the Asia Pacific Region. So seeing what is happening in the US only, is a narrow look at what is now a global company, not just an American company. Also, iPad. Even Tim Cook has said that the iPad has taken some sales out of PC’s and Macs.

Anyway, whatever the case may be, we’ll know on the 24th, when Apple does the Conference Call to announce the results for the quarter.

Sprint sold 1.5 million iPhones to new customers in Q1

TUAW:

Of those buying an iPhone with Sprint, 44 percent were new customers. Sprint said in its earning conference call that 40% of those new Sprint iPhone users reportedly broke a contract to switch to the carrier. About 60% would not have switched if Sprint didn’t have the iPhone.

The iPhone is not only increasing sales, it’s helping Sprint keep customers, too. The carrier said that iPhone churn rate is low, with significantly less iPhone users asking for support or returning their phone when compared to other smartphone users.

So, every carrier in the U.S. that sells the iPhone, is selling them like hot cakes. And all of this is with the “disappointing” 4S.

Tim Cook Spells Out the Rapid Growth of Apple’s iPad

Apple sold 11.8 million iPads during the quarter, more than double the number it sold last year. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, helped put this in perspective during the company’s earnings call.

“Just two years after we shipped the initial iPad, we sold 67 million,” he said. “It took us 24 years to sell that many Macs, and five years for that many iPods, and over three years for that many iPhones.” [NY Times]

I remember when the original iPad came out and people mocked it saying that it was just a “Big iPhone”. Well, how do you like your “Big iPhones” now?

HTC sees recovery but no return to U.S. peaks, blames iPhone

Reuters:

Taiwan smartphone maker HTC Corp won’t have the United States as its largest market from this year, a sign of how far it has fallen and how much more work it has to do in Asia to regain share lost to rivals Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics.

Chief Executive Officer Peter Chou forecast better times ahead for the company after a slump in the first quarter, but said HTC won’t return to the days when more than 50 percent of its revenue came from the United States.

“A major challenge we faced last year was the big drop in sales in the U.S. because of competition from the iPhone 4S,” Chou told an analysts’ briefing on Tuesday on the company’s first-quarter results released earlier in the month. He did not elaborate.

What? So you mean the iPhone 4S, the big disappointment, the crappy same-form factor as the phone before it, is kicking their but? How could that be? Isn’t Android the hot ticket?

iPhone Again Represents Over Half of Verizon’s Smartphone Sales in 1Q 2012

MacRumors [Link]:

Marking the first significant piece of data to help build a picture of Apple’s quarterly iPhone sales numbers ahead of next week’s earnings release, Verizon today announced its own earnings results for the first quarter of 2012, revealing during the associated conference call that it activated 3.2 million iPhones during the quarter.

Overall, Verizon reported sales of 6.3 million smartphones during the first quarter, meaning that the iPhone continues to represent just over half of the carrier’s smartphone business.

But, Android is winning.

Demand for iPhone 4S is still high and growing.

Despite growing competition and rumors that the company may be releasing a new model next fall, 56% of the respondents who plan to buy a smartphone in the next three months plan to buy an iPhone — up 2 percentage points from the last survey, taken at the height of the holiday shopping season.

Not bad for a phone at mid cycle. I still say, when the new one comes and you have the 4S and the 4 at discounted price or free, the sales numbers are going to be just insane.
