Google and Samsung: With partners like these, who needs enemies?

Venturebeat

That’s one reason, according to Google’s just-former Android head Andy Rubin, Google acquired Motorola: a hedge against any one Android partner getting too big, too powerful.

The big question now as we come off a year in which Samsung sold 400 million phones globally is this: Is that hedge big enough?

This is something that looks inevitable, my guess is that in a year or so Samsung will fork Android so they can tie their own services to their devices, or come out with their own OS (maybe they can make Tizen run Android apps). Google made a bet with Android in order to ensure that they wouldn’t be left out of mobile, but they can’t rely on others to do it for them. The best thing Google can do is to use Motorola to produce their Nexus line of devices and ensure a pure Google experience along with updates. Otherwise, they will be at the mercy of Samsung and the others because Android is open (at least to a point) and manufacturers can do what they want with it. Today they are partners, tomorrow fierce rivals. This is a dog eat dog world.

Samsung Galaxy device owners affected by crashes related to TouchWiz clipboard copying bug

TNW:

Samsung devices running TouchWiz and Android 3.0 or higher have a fatal clipboard bug that can cause it to become permanently unusable until a factory reset. It seems to occur randomly.

You would think that Samesung would have the Copy and Paste part right, after all, they are the master copiers.

Apple iPhone 5 Overtakes Samsung Galaxy S3 to Become World’s Best-Selling Smartphone Model in Q4 2012

Strategy Analytics: (Via The Loop)

According to the latest research from our Handset Country Share Tracker (CST) service, Apple’s iPhone 5 overtook Samsung’s Galaxy S3 to become the world’s best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Apple’s iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S together accounted for 1 in 5 of all smartphones shipped worldwide in Q4 2012. This was an impressive performance, given the iPhone portfolio’s premium pricing. We estimate Samsung’s Galaxy S3 was the world’s third best-selling smartphone model and it shipped 15.4 million units globally, capturing 7 percent share in the fourth quarter of 2012. (Emphasis mine)

So yes, the iPhone 5 is a piece of crap that isn’t selling.

Samsung (005930) is reportedly quietly replacing faulty Galaxy S III devices according to many users on XDA Developers. The issue appears to be related to the NAND becoming corrupted and killing off the Galaxy S III’s mainboard, which causes the phone to essentially “brick” itself. Users have reported the issues have affected some devices after 150-200 days after purchase.

This happens, and I don’t read anything about Galaxygate. If this happens to Apple…

Samsung to issue a fix for Exynos vulnerability as soon as possible.

Samsung, on Android Central:

Samsung is aware of the potential security issue related to the Exynos processor and plans to provide a software update to address it as quickly as possible.

Who knows when your carrier will release it.

The issue may arise only when a malicious application is operated on the affected devices; however, this does not affect most devices operating credible and authenticated applications.

Except for the fact that malware is sometimes lurking on Google Play, there shouldn’t be any problems.
