Supercapacitors Can Now Replace Batteries

The result was pure organic graphene sheet. The discovery itself was revolutionary, but they stumbled upon another exciting realization when Maher El-Kady, a researcher in the team charged up a thin graphene sheet to light up a small light bulb.

After charging for three seconds, the sheet was able to keep the bulb burning for over five minutes.  That made an extraordinary idea of supercapacitor, or what they call super supercapacitor, that combines the best traits of a battery and a capacitor.

The discovery means that you could make a storage source to charge up and discharge in a matter of seconds, and can store high potential of energy.

This technology could solve the battery limitations on all electronics and maybe help crack the range anxiety problem with electric cars. We could charge a smartphone or tablet in seconds, and a car or a laptop in minutes. Very cool.

After Sandy Knocks Out Power, Rescue Keeps Data Center Alive

In a lower Manhattan building evacuated during Hurricane Sandy, more than a dozen people on Wednesday carried 5-gallon buckets filled with diesel fuel up 17 flights of stairs. Each of them carried two buckets — one in each arm — up two flights of stairs, then handed them off to the next person. The stairwell was pitch dark, slippery and reeked of diesel.

The diesel was powering a backup generator on the roof that fueled a data center run by Peer 1 Hosting. Inside, rows and rows of Peer 1’s servers provide the computing power for about 100 companies like Squarespace, a Web publishing software business, and Fog Creek Software, a company that develops tools for the software industry. Those companies rely on Peer 1’s data center to enable thousands of customers around the world to run their websites.

That, is dedication.
